WorkshopFix the chip before it becomes a crack
A fresh stone chip is the cheapest windscreen problem you will ever have, as long as it is fixed before it spreads. A Vision Windscreens repairs chips at your home or workplace anywhere on the Sunshine Coast, or at our Kunda Park workshop. We check first that the chip can be repaired, then inject resin, cure it under UV light and polish the surface, so you can usually drive away shortly after we finish.
This page is about one thing: stone chips, and whether yours can be fixed without replacing the windscreen. It explains what makes a chip repairable, what the repair involves and how long it takes, and what to do when the chip sits in your line of sight. Choose your suburb below for local details, or see our windscreen repairs page if the damage has already become a crack.
What to know first
A chip is damage to the outer layer of a laminated windscreen. Fresh, it is small, clean and dry, which is exactly when resin bonds best. Every day it is left open, dirt and moisture work in, and heat, cold and road vibration put stress on the break. That is how a chip the size of a fingernail becomes a crack across the screen, and a quick repair becomes a replacement.
A repair is usually suitable when the chip is smaller than a dollar coin, has no long cracks running from it, is not at the edge of the windscreen and is not in the driver's primary view. That last point matters in Queensland: the inspection manual defines the primary vision area as the part of the screen swept by the wipers, and it rejects repairs that leave significant optical defects in the driver's view. A good repair restores strength and greatly improves clarity, but a faint mark can remain, so a chip directly in front of the driver is sometimes better dealt with by a new screen.
We make that call with you, on the spot, before any work starts.
Common questions we solve
I can't tell if my chip is small enough to repair.
Chips vary in size, depth and shape, and many drivers only notice them once they have been there a while.
A chip that is too large, too deep or too close to the edge will not hold a repair, and fixing it anyway wastes your money.
We assess the chip first. As a guide, repairs suit chips smaller than a dollar coin, with no long cracks running from them, away from the edge and outside the driver's main view. If it is not repairable, we explain the replacement options before anything else happens.
The chip is right in front of me when I drive.
Stones thrown up by traffic often strike the middle of the screen, inside the area the wipers sweep.
Queensland's inspection manual rejects repairs that leave significant optical defects in the driver's view, and a faint mark can remain after even a good repair.
We tell you honestly how the finished repair is likely to look. Where a chip sits squarely in your line of sight, we may recommend replacing the windscreen for the clearest, safest view.
It's only a small chip, so I've been leaving it.
A small chip is easy to ignore, but changes in temperature and the bumps of everyday driving keep working on the break.
Once dirt and moisture get in, the resin cannot bond as well, and once the chip spreads into a crack it usually cannot be repaired at all.
Book within days rather than weeks. Our mobile team comes to your home or workplace, so fitting a repair in does not mean losing half a day.
I'm not sure a resin repair will last.
Drivers see the repair take half an hour and wonder whether something that quick can be permanent.
A repair that fails means paying twice, and eventually replacing the windscreen anyway.
We clean and dry the break, inject high-grade resin into it so it fills the damaged area, then cure it hard under UV light and polish it level with the glass. The cured resin bonds within the break, restores strength and stops the chip spreading under normal driving.
It's raining, or the car is parked outside.
Resin needs clean, dry glass to bond, and the weather does not always cooperate.
A repair rushed onto wet glass will not hold.
A carport, garage or shed roof is enough cover for a mobile repair. If there is none, we rebook rather than do a repair that will not last, or you can bring the car to our Kunda Park workshop.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a windscreen chip repair take?
Most chip repairs take about 30 to 45 minutes from setup to completion. You can usually drive shortly after the repair is finished.
Will the chip disappear completely?
A quality repair greatly improves clarity and stops the chip spreading, but a faint blemish may remain. The structural strength of the glass is restored even where a small mark is still visible.
How soon should I book a chip repair?
As soon as you can. Fresh chips are easier to repair; the longer one is left, the more dirt and moisture get in, and the more likely it is to spread with temperature changes and bumps.
Can you repair a chip in the rain?
The glass has to be dry for the resin to bond, so a mobile repair needs cover such as a carport, garage or shed roof. Without cover, we rebook or you can bring the car to our Kunda Park workshop.
What happens if my chip can't be repaired?
We explain why and quote a replacement windscreen before any work starts. Replacement windscreens are brand new, laminated and meet the Australian Design Rules.
Do you help with insurance claims for chip repairs?
Many policies cover windscreen repair. We can provide documentation and help you understand your options for a chip repair or a necessary replacement.
